Creating and Recommending Baselines in UCM Clearcase

         Creating and Recommending Baselines in a UCM Project is done through the ClearCase Project Explorer.  The Project Explorer can be started through the Start menu in Windows or through the ClearCase Explorer on the UCM page of the Toolbox tab.

Creating a new Baseline:

Select the integration stream of the UCM Project where the new baseline is to be created.  Then right click on the integration stream and select Make Baseline…  This will bring up the Make Baseline Wizard.

In the Base Name box enter the name of the baseline you are creating.  This should be descriptive but concise.  Make sure baseline naming conventions are followed. Enter a description of the baseline in the Description box. If the new baseline is to be used within the current UCM Project, leave Baseline Type to Incremental.  If the baseline is to be used outside of the current UCM Project, set this to Full.

  Select the Activities tab.The Activities tab will show all the activities on the integration stream that have not been included in a baseline.  Select the activities to include in the new baseline.

Care must be taken to make sure the activities selected do not have dependencies on other activities that have not been selected.  In this example, the second activity has been selected with out the first activity.  The same file was changed in both activities and an earlier version the file is in the activity that was not selected.  This causes a dependency between the two activities.  If this happens, the following dialog will be displayed.

If this dialog is displayed, select OK and select the activity that has caused the dependency from the Activity tab.Once all activities have been selected for the new baseline, select the OK button.  This will create the new baseline.Close all windows.

Recommending a Baseline:

To recommend a baseline for a UCM Project, right mouse the integration stream of the UCM Project and select Recommend Baselines…  This will bring up the Recommend Baseline window.

Highlight the component that contains the new baseline to be recommended and select Add…

In the Add Baseline window, select the baseline of the component and then select the OK button.

Repeat this process for any other component baselines that need to be up modified. 

Note:  When a new baseline is created it may affect more then one component. Be sure to update all the components that were affected by the new baseline.

Once all components have been updated, select OK.   This will create a new recommended baseline for the UCM Project.
